India & Nepal

Relax Inn - Kolkata, India
www.relaxinnkolkata.com
Stayed: 2014 March 16 - 19 (3 nights)

South side of Kolkata. A small B&B. Mostly Helpful stuff – the manager was extremely helpful and so was the kitchen staff. We had fun talking to the chef !! And he cooks amazing breakfast - it was so good we asked him to cook us dinner too... three times!

The room is quite spacious, the shower has strong water pressure and hot water. Free Wifi… We had enjoyed our stay here.

You can request airport pick up (probably a good idea if you are arriving after midnight like us) – it was 1300 rupees (probably a bit expensive but we were glad we organized this – especially because this was our first stop in India).

Snowlion Home Stay - Darjeeling, India
www.snowlionhomestay.com
Stayed: 2014 March 20 - 24 (4 nights)

This is a cute & small place run by a Tibetan family. It's not a hotel. It's a Tibetan family's house which is converted into a small B&B. So don't expect resort level luxury. What you will get is a warm welcome and a very cozy place to stay. And definitely interesting experience.

The rooms are fairly clean and ok size (bed, small lounge chairs, coffee tables, wardrobe) with a small bathroom. There is a generator in case of power outage (and it happens a lot - in Darjeeling)
The heater & hot water does not work when the power is out so you'll need to plan your showering carefully.

We stayed in March but it was freezing cold. The staff gave us hot water bottles in the evening so that helped a little but either way I was cold! You can also rent a room heater for 200 rupees a night.

Location: Very convenient. Close to a lot of restaurants and shops. Customer service: Very helpful and polite staff.

Mi Casa - Kathmandu, Nepal
Book this hotel
Stayed: 2014 March 25 - 29 (4 nights)

This is definitely one of our favorite places we stayed - mainly because of Dhruba & Sylvia's warm hospitality. They made sure we were comfortable and happy throughout our stay.

The breakfast at Mi Casa was so so so good. Big breakfast – to give you an example; our first day we had: 2 eggs of our choice, coffee/tea, juice, toasts, muesli, yogurt, jam, chocolate muffin, orange, apple & banana. And it was slightly different every morning – they were all great.

Highly recommended!!!!!!!!!!!

Hotel Tara - Pokhara, Nepal
http://hoteltaranepal.com
Stayed: 2014 March 29 - April 4 (6 nights)

The hotel is near the lake, short walk to a lot of restaurants and shops. The power goes off constantly but it's the same anywhere in Nepal. They have a generator so no issue with hot water, in fact the shower was quite nice – strong water pressure and I didn't have to worry about running out of hot water.

The staff were quite friendly and pleasant. The room was spacious and clean.. we had a small balcony too.. we could see a little bit of Himalayan mountains from our window! Overall it was a good hotel for the price.

Rivatas Hotel - Varanasi, India
Rivatas By Ideal
Stayed: 2014 April 5 - 7 (2 nights)

This is a comfortable hotel in busy Varanasi - The hotel is about 10 minutes away from the Varanasi junction railway station. About 15~20 minutes to the ghat, depending on which ghat you go to.

A lot of auto rickshaws in front of the hotel so you can negotiate.... (we didn't really have any problems but IF they don't give you the price you want or if they are not around, you can walk down to the JHV mall (1 minute away from the hotel - walk west), there are heaps of taxi/auto rickshaws there.

The breakfast was really good - wide variety... Room was clean and spacious. The wifi works fine in the room. Most of the staff were helpful and friendly, so overall it was a good hotel to stay, no complaints!

Hotel Taj Vilas - Agra, India
Hotel The Taj Vilas
Stayed: 2014 April 8 - 10 (2 nights)

Close to the Taj Mahal. About 2km walk to the East gate (20~30 minutes walk). The room was ok, nothing special. We had absolutely no view – only a view of the next building about 5m away. The breakfast was below average... staff not so friendly, especially the front desk staff....

But did I mention it was close to the Taj Mahal?

Umaid Bhawan Heritage Hotel - Jaipur, India
Umaid Bhawan Hotel
Stayed: 2014 April 10 - 15 (5 nights)

This is a really interesting heritage hotel in Bani Park, Jaipur. The room we stayed was huge! We had our own little dining table, study desk, two showers, dressing table and a kind size bed…..Everything was perfect until we found a rat in our shower. The hotel staff ended up killing the rat after chasing it for awhile (at about 1 am)...We didn't see any rat afterward so good.

The restaurant on the rooftop was nice. The food was great. The service… depending on who you speak to. They were mostly friendly but there were some grumpy ones too, but still overall, it was a nice / unique hotel we enjoyed our stay!

Executive Enclave Hotel - Mumbai, India
Executive Enclave Hotel
Stayed: 2014 April 16 - 18 (2 nights)

We heard that the hotels in Mumbai are more expensive than other parts of India and that you'll never feel like you're getting your money's worth... I guess this is one of those hotels in Mumbai.

To be fair, some hotel staff were quite helpful but there were too many negatives than we can't really recommend this hotel (unless you must stay around this area... maybe overnight stay would be ok but no more).

The room was tiny and run down. Bathroom smelled a bit. Ceilings were a bit lower than normal hotels. Breakfast was just sad. The reception stuff was abrupt and distracted. We did not enjoy interacting with him at all.

Overall, we tolerated this hotel as it was only two nights but there is no way we would come back to this hotel again.

Aryans Hotel - Goa, India
Aryans Hotel
Stayed: 2014 April 18 - 23 (5 nights)

We were in a smaller cottage (Deluxe cottage) for the first 2 nights and then the bigger cottage (Premium cottage) for the rest of the stay.

In short - we don't recommend the deluxe cottage - too small, too hot, no view. Depressing.

Premium cottage by the pool was spacious and cooler (higher ceiling).... shower was bigger, everything was better... The view of the ocean was nice too.

Breakfast is good. Staff are polite and helpful. There is Wifi but pretty slow.

Small but nice pool... 2 mins walk to the beach... Overall, it was a nice hotel at a reasonable price.

Red Fox Hotel - Delhi, India
Red Fox Hotel
Stayed: 2014 April 23 - 25 (2 nights)

This was a good place to stay near the airport. We arrived at domestic airport and had to leave from international airport two days later so it was perfect for us.

It is about 30 - 40 mins drive from Old city area etc so it might not be the most convenient location if you are going to be doing a lot of sightseeing.
